Waterspouts

Waterspouts Fact File

•  While most waterspouts form over water others are tornadoes that move from land to water

•  If a tornado passes over water it can suck up fish and frogs and dump them in a rain storm over land

•  Most waterspouts die when they pass form water to land

•  Waterspouts are formed year round in warm climates and only in summer in cool climates

•  Most waterspouts in the united states form around the Florida Keys or Great Lakes

Sometimes the whirling winds of a tornado form over a lake or an ocean. This may form a tall thin column of water called a waterspout . The water comes from moisture in the air not from the water in the lake or ocean. The water spout may reach all the way to the bottom of a cloud. A single waterspout usually causes little damage, with winds less than 50mph (80kph) with most dying away in approximately 15 minutes. Sometimes 2 or 3 waterspouts form at the same time right next to each other, these water spouts may cause more damage.
